Evaluation Centre for Sport Science and University Sports completed

27.02.2023

The evaluation of the Centre for Sport Science and University Sports has been completed. The key evaluation topics were the further development of the curricula and sports science research in the thematic complex of health as well as the sport science part of the Vienna Doctoral School of Pharmaceutical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences.

As part of the evaluation process, the Department of Sport Science and the University Sport Institute Vienna (USI) first carried out a self-evaluation, followed by a site visit. For the USI, the Unit for Quality Assurance also conducted a survey of course participants; the evaluation report has been published.

The international evaluators, chaired by Professor Jaap H. van Dieën (Head Department of Human Movement Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), see the following strengths, among others, „Young enthusiastic faculty, some really good research groups (e.g. aging), well-structured PhD program“, and weaknesses, „Gender imbalance in faculty, fragmented research and educational profiles, lack of visibility in the public health domain, missing strategy, high teaching and administrative work load (subjectively experienced), inappropriate student selection criteria to enter university, lack of state-of-the-art training equipment, sports facilities only partially adaptable to today's needs and variety of sport offers which requires more space for material.”

The evaluators see opportunities for further development in the following areas in particular: “Emphasis on public health at the university level, need to educate more PE teachers, profit of parallel educational tracks to make teaching more efficient, separate but synergistic strategy development for USI and SSI (Department of Sport Science), new doctoral school, plans for renewal of facilities, expand successful research groups.”

The evaluation results were extensively discussed between Rectorate and leadership of the centre. Most of the expert suggestions for improvement were included in the implementation agreement. The monitoring of the agreed measures takes place within the framework of the target agreement process.
