Consulting Services for Publications

Our consulting services are available to all researchers and students at the University of Vienna who are interested in publishing new journals or series or in improving on an existing publication.

The point of departure is a strategy, which is drawn up by the (potential) editors and describes the characteristics of the new/improved publication:

  • Profile: Speciality areas to be addressed, substantive/methodological focus, mission and goals, target groups, planned scope of distribution, differentiation from other already existing publications (innovation and novelty)
  • Quality assurance and organisation: Cooperation partners, peer-review process, editorial board, language(s), planned circulation, publication form and frequency, etc.
  • Financing

We can offer advice on the following topics on the basis of such a strategy:

1. Analysis of the current situation, including a bibliometric analysis

  • If an existing publication is to be optimised: Positioning in the respective field (focus), determining the relevant magazine parameters (distribution, publication frequency, etc.), print-versus-online analysis, indexing in the databanks of the relevant field and for citations (e.g. Web of Science, Scopus, etc.), visibility, impact (citation frequency), development of the publication (timeline), ‘origin’ of the contributions (institutional, national, international)
  • If a new publication is to be founded/introduced: Needs analysis in the relevant field, ascertaining the existence of similar publications, drawing up a profile of the journal in question, financing.

2. Quality requirements

The Unit for Quality Assurance will carry out a review based on the criteria of various indices (e.g. Web of Science, ERIH Guidelines), such as peer reviewing, editorial board, forms of publication, international presence, etc.

3. Discussion on open access publishing

Advantages and disadvantages of open access publishing, models, sample projects, software, long-term archiving, etc. For more information on open access, please go to http://openaccess.univie.ac.at or http://open-access.net/.

4. Target analysis

Discussion and evaluation of the submitted strategy, strategies for increasing transdisciplinary and international visibility.

This is a joint service offered by the service unit Vienna University Library and Archive Services and the Unit for Quality Assurance.
